Michelin Restaurants in Barcelona
For the last 3 years, the vast majority of the worlds best food critics and journalists have been united one particular topic something that doesnt happen very often and that has been the choice for the best restaurant in the world. This prestigious honour goes to Ferran Adri, the Catalan chef who owns and runs El Bulli restaurant in Roses, near to Girona in Northern Catalonia. Adri is currently touring Europe promoting his new book A day at El Bulli and has done much to get Spanish restaurants and in particular Catalonia back on the food map. So who has Adris style or enthusiasm rubbed off on for 2009? Or who did he copy from and has had a well established restaurant business in the Catalan Capital for more years?
Well, the good news is that there were 2 new additions to the Michelin guide last year, which bodes well for the future. The first is a spawn from the kitchen of Adri and is Comer 24 located in the Borne area of Barcelona, on Carrer Comer, number 24 (funnily enough). Here Carles Abellan combines tastes and flavours from all around the world; America (with a foia and truffle burger, no less) Asia, Andalusia, Italy and of course Catalonia. Its common to see crowds around the entrance of the restaurant next to the Chocolate Museum in Barcelona and the Tapas tasting Menu has become as famous as the restaurant itself.
The second addition to the Michelin list is Lluans which moved to the Barcelona Market in the historic fishermans quarter of Barceloneta, earning itself a star in the process. Here Angel Pascual does what he has been doing best for 16 years at the other location, providing hearty, earthy ingredients in interesting combinations.
ABaC restaurant has 2 Michelin stars and joins some of the most beautiful buildings up on Avenida Tibidabo, just below the Tibidabo Mountain. This is the same location as the famous house in Carlos Ruiz Zafons Shadow of the Wind International bestseller, and also has the last working tram in Barcelona. Xavier Pellicer and his team have some of the most creative ideas in modern gastronomy and the location and building itself could not be better, with fantastic decoration including additions from Versace.
Slightly outside of Barcelona, but well worth a mention, as its the only female on the list is Carme Ruscalledas Restaurant Sant Pau in San Pol de Mar a coastal town just up the coast from Barcelona, maintains its simplicity of an old Villa out looking a garden and the Mediterranean Sea.
