This is all about a Self catering holiday in Devon. Although the experience is ideal to share with friends and family I would also recommend such an experience for those wishing to travel alone. I¡¯d like to start of describing the surrounding which was a typical glorious countryside in Devon. The owners of the historic Manor House welcome guests to the two elegant apartments within the historic manor house set within a 750 acre country estate in some of the most breathtaking surrounding ever seen on British shores. The welcoming is unique and exclusive to British hospitality. The self catering accommodation which we all used was two private apartments on the first floor approached through a cobbled courtyard. Great care is always taken to preserve the traditional feel of a country house. Twenty first century comfort is important too so there is TV and all the mod cons. However there was a no smoking rule in full force in the holiday accommodation, and it was easy to see why. With such beautiful surroundings why would you even think about lighting one up?
The two flats can only be described as the two wings that they are adjacent on. Both are elegant and spacious. The Park Wing has views over traditional parkland while the Garden Wing looks onto the cobbled courtyard and walled garden. As for activities for the family well all are more than welcome to wander in the beautiful gardens and take walks across the estate. There were swings, a barbecue, paddocks, ponies and sheep to see. There is also sporting facilities as such tennis on the family¡¯s grass tennis court when available. I can only describe the landscape at as stunningly attractive. It retains many of the traditional features present for hundreds of years, such as ancient trees and hedgerows, old lanes and agricultural buildings - some with thatched roofs and made from cob. There is plenty of time to draw the surroundings and yet another great hobby fulfilled. Many of the local B and B¡¯s stand on a 600 ft contour line and the highest point on the estate is Cadbury Castle, the site of an ancient Iron Age fort - home of the Dragon mentioned in Risdon¡¯s survey of Devon 1626. To summarise it was a splendid time and you will get plenty of magic moments.
You might like to bring the following: some pencils, activity books for the children, and a camera. The whole family should pack some basic hiking gear as well as it can get rather muddy outside. Breakfast and dinner is provided but if you are going for walkies do make sure you have plenty of cash in hand as the nearest ATM can be miles away. All this said with the usual seasonal precautions and you could be well on your way to a lifetime experience.
